Maryは愛想の悪い少女。イギリス人の両親のもと、インドで生まれインドに暮らしている。両親にもかまわれず、召使いのKamalaが面倒を見ていた。街に恐ろしい病気が流行して、両親も召使いも死んでしまう。その後、Yorkshire, in the north of Englandの人里遠くに住む、これまた感じの悪い猫背の叔父(Mr. Archbald Craven)のところに住むことになった。

MaryはEnglandのYorkshireにある叔父（Mr. Craven）の家に、その家のお手伝いさんのMrs Medlockに連れて行かれる。そこでは少女の召使いMarthaがいた。その家はthe moor（原野）の中にあった。鍵の閉まったsecret gardenがあった。庭師のおじさんがいたのでそれについて聞いても教えてくれない。Marthaに聞くと、その庭はMr. Cravenと奥さんのMrs. Cravenが仲良く世話していたが、奥さんがその庭の中で事故で死んでそれ以来Mr. Cravenは誰にも庭に入れなくなった。家の中でMaryは誰かが泣いているのを聞いたが、Marthaも家事手伝いのMrs Medlockもそれが何か隠しているようだった。
